MXR EVH90 EVH Phase 90 Phaser

The MXR EVH90 Phase 90 is an expressive guitar phaser associated with Eddie Van Halen’s unmistakable sound. Its red, white and black striped enclosure makes it instantly recognisable, while the effect itself remains simple to control. The EVH90 brings vintage-style and more assertive phasing into one compact pedal, giving guitarists a way to add motion, depth and swirling character to both rhythm and lead parts.

Script and Block phaser modes

The EVH90 includes a dedicated Script switch for changing between two classic Phase 90 flavours. Script mode offers a softer, smoother vintage-style modulation, while the Block mode produces a more pronounced modern phasing response. Having both on one pedal is useful when you want subtle movement behind clean chords in one song and a stronger, sweeping effect through distorted guitar in another. The difference is musical rather than a completely separate effect type.

One Speed knob, many musical uses

The main Speed control sets how quickly the phaser cycles. Slower settings add gentle motion and spaciousness to sustained notes or rhythm parts; faster settings make the sweeping effect more obvious. This simple layout is easy to adjust between songs without scrolling through presets. Try the pedal with clean, crunch and higher-gain amplifier settings to hear how the movement interacts with the rest of your sound.

Signature look and practical power requirements

The striped finish was inspired by Eddie Van Halen’s famous Frankenstein guitar, making the EVH90 as distinctive visually as it is sonically. The pedal runs from a 9V battery or a compatible external 9V adapter, which is generally purchased separately. It uses standard guitar input and output connections, so it can fit into an existing pedalboard with ordinary patch cables.

Is the EVH90 right for your rig?

The EVH90 suits players who want a recognisable phaser with hands-on control and a choice between classic and modern voices. It is not a multi-effect processor with numerous unrelated modulation types, and it does not replace chorus, delay or flanger pedals.
